Jewellery Beyond Ornament: Mycenaean Meaning, Contemporary Transformation

In Mycenaean Pylos, jewellery was never just decoration. Rings, pendants, and beads carried ritual and symbolic roles—they marked status, protected the wearer, affirmed identity, and often served as offerings to the gods. Many of the pieces uncovered in tombs around Messinia remind us that jewellery was part of life’s passage, worn in ceremonies and carried into death as a companion for the soul.

My role is not to reproduce the past, but to curate its echoes. I take fragments of form, symbol, or material and allow them to find new expression. In this way, I see myself less as an imitator and more as a caretaker, carrying forward elements of a culture that shaped this land, giving them a contemporary voice through jewellery that can still be worn, touched, and lived with.

Here in Messinia, history is not confined to museum cases—it lingers in the stones, the sea, the very textures of the landscape. To live and work in such a place is to be constantly reminded that jewellery is more than ornament. It is, and always has been, a bridge—between beauty and belief, between the ancient and the immediate, between the world of Mycenaean Pylos and the life of the person who wears it today.
